The Silicon Island project in Penang, Malaysia, has reclaimed 81 hectares of land, marking significant progress in the state’s largest reclamation venture, as reported by Penang Infrastructure Corporation Sdn Bhd (PIC) CEO Datuk Seri Farizan Darus.
The project, part of the Penang South Islands master plan, spans 930.7 hectares and is divided into two phases: 510 hectares in Phase 1 and 420 hectares in Phase 2, with completion expected by 2032.
Located off Penang’s southern coast, Silicon Island aims to extend the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, fostering investment, innovation, and job creation while enhancing local amenities.
A marine viaduct, set to open by January 2029, will connect the island to the mainland, improving access to the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge.
Community facilities, including a Matang Food Court and a Fishermen’s Service Centre, are also planned. To mitigate environmental impact, eco-shorelines and mangrove planting are incorporated.
Additionally, RM11.7 million in ex-gratia payments and new boats have been provided to 791 fishermen under the Social Impact Management Plan, ensuring community benefits alongside economic growth.
